| Mary Cassatt and Catherine Murphy, Great Women Artists of the Past and Present, and Contemporary Dutch Artist Berend Strik |
|
| WHAT: |
My favorite current exhibition-"Mary Cassatt: Prints and Drawings from the Collection of Vollard"-reveals experimental printmaking techniques and a surprisingly modernist sensibility in innovative work previously unseen by contemporary audiences. We will explore Cassatt's printing styles as well as her relationship with legendary dealer Vollard in this "amazing opportunity for anyone who's not quite figured out that Mary Cassatt wasn't just a great woman artist...but quite simply one of the greatest artists of the last 200 years." In her show of gorgeous new paintings and drawings, "Hedonist of the Ordinary", Catherine Murphy registers the different ways the visual and physical realms collide. "By making vision and tactility synonymous, the artist achieves something unprecedented in realist painting...she infuses her rigorously conceived investigations of the everyday world with an abundance of inventiveness." Dutch artist Berend Strik's embroidered photographs simultaeneously underscore and expand upon the reality presented. The images are chosen from photographs the artist has taken on his travels through Africa, documenting the people, architecture and post-colonial landscapes of the continent. By perforating them with a needle and thread, the two-dimensional quality of the image is disrupted, creating a work that is both tactile and conceptually driven. |
